How much should you tip a tour guide in Ephesus?

The honest baseline for 2026: on a private tour, €10–€20 per group for a half day, €20–€40 for a full day, given at the end if you were happy. On a big group tour, €3–€5 per person. And genuinely, truly: zero is allowed. That’s the whole answer; the rest of this page is the texture around it.

First, the thing tourists are never told

Licensed guides in Turkey are professionals with negotiated day rates — this is a career with a university track, national exams and a licence badge, not a gig economy. When you tip an Ephesus guide you are saying that was excellent, not here is your salary. This should remove most of the anxiety: you cannot meaningfully underpay someone by tipping "wrong."

What people actually give (we compared notes)

Currency: euros, dollars, pounds and lira are all normal and all welcome; nobody is checking exchange rates at the gate. Cash, handed over with a handshake and a sentence — "that was wonderful, thank you" — beats any amount slipped over in silence.

Three small rules of local etiquette

• Tip the person, not the clipboard. Hand it to your guide directly at goodbye. If there was a driver, a separate smaller note for them is a classy touch.
• Don’t tip mid-tour. It changes the temperature of the day for everyone. The end is the moment.
• Reviews are currency too. For licensed guides and small agencies, a specific, named review is worth more than the banknote. If you loved the day and are choosing between a bigger tip and ten minutes of typing — the typing wins.
